'Guildford Vineyard is a new enterprise in gold rush country bordered by the Castlemaine Diggings National Park. It's been a work in progress, but everything is coming together nicely, with a native garden flourishing as a sanctuary for bird life, a piste for those who want to play pétanque, and a winery cut straight out of the rugged slate hillside. A pizza oven, adorned with work by a local sculptor, provides good food, and the hearty Shiraz is right in the best regional style.' RALPH KYTE-POWELL
