Lake View Homestead is significant for its association with the distinguished Australian author Henry Handel Richardson (pseudonym for Ethel Richardson). Her early years in Chiltern featured in the third volume of the classic novel, The Fortunes of Richard Mahony.
The charming red brick house is furnished in period style and contains a small collection of Richardson memorabilia.
The birthday of HHR is marked each year on the third January with a picnic tea at Lake View. The Chiltern Literary day on the same day also celebrates this and other local literary links.
