Maryborough

What does Mary Poppins have to do with Maryborough? The author of the world famous book happened to be born in this town, which means there are a whole lot of “practically perfect” experiences to enjoy – including a magical tour with Miss Poppins as your guide!

With its rich history, colonial buildings, interesting museums and fairytale connections – Maryborough is a wonderful place to stop during your Queensland holiday. The city was one of Australia’s main immigration points from the mid-1800s to Federation – with thousands of settlers flocking to the new colony. The remnants of its fascinating past can be found in the architecture, with stately colonial buildings having been transformed into restaurants, cafés, shops and museums.

You can learn more about Maryborough’s history by taking a free Heritage City Walking Tour or heading to Portside – the original port precinct which is now home to three museums as well as some very old rum barrels. Be sure to stop for a taste of the local port and wine! There’s also a ghost tour that runs the last weekend of the month for those brave enough to venture into the city’s many haunted historic buildings.

You’ll find one of Australia’s oldest botanic gardens – Queens Park – in Maryborough. It’s a lovely place for a picnic or morning walk. For those who like to shop, check out the antique and collectable stores around town as well as the popular Thursday inner city market.
