Mount Kembla Mining Heritage Incorporated commemorates the tragic disaster of 1902 when the Mount Kembla mine exploded killing 96 men and boys.
Held in Windy Gully Cemetery with the surrounding forest trees backlit, the hour-long commemoration service starts at 6.30pm on the evening of the date of the disaster.
Candles are lit for the disaster victims. This year's ceremony focuses on the 10 boys (14 to 17 years old) who perished, and youth labour at the time. Folk music and other performances bring a balance to this solemn event.
There is no vehicular access. Free bus transport starts picking 5.30pm from Mount Kembla Hotel and the Kembla Heights Bowling Club. The Kembla Heights Bowling Club Restaurant bistro is open after the ceremony.
