Latitude is a collaborative project between marine biologist and artist Karin Beaumont and Aboriginal artist Vicki West, which explores their personal and shared connections to Tasmania’s coastal environments.
The artists received funding through Arts Tasmania’s Assistance to Individuals Program in 2011 to further extend their partnership, which developed through a process of mentoring, collaboration and exchange.
Vicki West is an esteemed Tasmanian Aboriginal installation artist who works with kelp, textiles, vines and seeds to create sculptural installations inspired by her cultural heritage.
Marine biologist and jewellery designer Karin Beaumont is a former scientist of the Australian Antarctic Division who completed a PhD on microzooplankton. She extends her scientific inquiries into Antarctic marine biology through her arts practice, which is inspired by microscopic patterns and forms found in nature.
In Latitude, Karin and Vicki combine traditional techniques with modern technology to create a series of kelp and fibre-based sculptural objects inspired and informed by their respective artistic backgrounds.
This exhibition of jewellery, design and installation-based artworks is presented as part of the program of events arranged to celebrate the 2011-2012 Antarctic Centennial Year (ACY) in Hobart.Visit Website
