Madame Butterfly
Madame Butterfly is one of Australia's favourite opera's, and is the tale of a young Geisha girl and her ill-fated love for an American soldier. Cio-Cio San is married off to Lieutenant Pinkerton. They fall in love, instantly, but when Pinkerton returns home, he discards his fragile Butterfly. And so, caught between two worlds, the old and the new, Madame Butterfly waits. One fine day, she knows, he will return...
This tragic tale is set in 1946 Nagasaki with a visually spectacular clash of traditional Japanese and modern Western dress - coloured further by Puccini's magnificent and unforgettable music.
