Crawford House Museum Airing of the Quilts

WAS YOUR ANCESTOR A QUILTER? Women convicts and immigrants who came to Australia in the 18th Century brought this skill with them and many a descendant carried on this tradition. Old flour and sugar sacks were favourite materials used, particularly for padding. Today’s quilts can be used to tell your family history stories The Patch family who settled in the Ballina Shire area were lucky to have a quilt maker in their family. The Patch family’s World War 1 quilt will be on display at the exhibition as well as The Tidy Town Tibouchina quilt made for the first 1980s Tidy Towns Competition.

If your interested in quilting then don’t miss the Alstonville Plateau Historical Society’s ‘AIRING OF THE QUILTS’ exhibition at Crawford House Museum 10 Wardell Road Alstonville. The Plateau Quilt makers will be there to answer any questions on quilt making for you.
