From Mist To Trees
Five major French works from the romantic period are juxtaposed with music from Japan.
Two of Australia’s leading percussionists, Thomas O’Kelly and David Jones will tackle works by Milhaud and Watanabe. David is regarded as a virtuoso and one of the most musical drummers in the world. Tom has performed extensively with Kanazawa Ensemble in Japan on the invitation of Maestro Hiroyuki Iwaki. Prior to this he worked with Pierre Boulez, the Ensemble Intercontemporian and Iannis Xennakis. Debussy’s translucent Prelude a l’apres-midi d’un faune, is mirrored by Takemitsu’s evocative how Slow The Wind. Berlioz’ vibrant overture Le Carnival Romain gets the concert off to a stirring start and Bizet’s Carmen Suite brings it to a passionate conclusion. Conducting the Darwin Symphony Orchestra for the first time is young West Australian Warwick Potter.
Guest concertmaster, Niki Vassilakis, is regarded as one of the most exciting violinists in Australia and is widely celebrated in Australia as a leading face of the Arts.
From Mist To Trees pre concert talk starts as 7.15pm with the concert starting at 8pm.
