Boonu Boonu Festival
A great opportunity to view Indigenous art and craft from 40 different artists.
Borroloola hosts the Boonu Boonu Festival, which brings together traditional dance groups and musicians and features contemporary music and visual art. Visitors to the festival can visit Waralungku Arts at the Borroloola art centre, which represents over 40 artists from the Yanyula, Garrawa, Gudanji and Marra languages. Some of the artists paint Dreamtime stories that are passed down to them from their elders, and others paint their favourite scenery from out in the bush. Most paintings are acrylic on canvas, but some are painted on unique surfaces like turtle shells and dugong bones. Artists also produce didjeridus, baskets, jewellery, coolamons and woodcarvings. There are plenty of places to stay for visitors to Borroloola to enjoy the Festival.
Borroloola is situated 80 kilometres inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory, 250 kilometres west of the Queensland border.
