Back to Birdum

Train enthusiasts will be delighted with this historic pilgrimage.

All aboard for this expedition to Birdum, to celebrate the anniversary of the first steam train to the end of the Never Never line on 4 September 1929. This historic pilgrimage starts at the Larrimah Wayside Inn and travels to the Daly Waters Railway Terrace, where the line was originally supposed to end. However the line was never extended further than Birdum and it became known as the line that went to nowhere. A small community developed at the Birdum railhead, which by 1930 consisted of a hotel, stores, a mechanical garage, boarding house, railway infrastructure and a few houses. In 1939, It was regarded a busy little town as most people drove to Birdum, left their vehicles and caught the train to Darwin.
