Cartoons by the Odd Mr Sprod
The Migration Museum is celebrating the life and works of George Napier Sprod in a new exhibition Cartoons by that Odd Mr Sprod. This exhibition includes rare drawings and notebooks done while in Changi Prison during the Second World War which are on loan from the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. It also features a range of his later cartoons which document Sprod’s post-war observation of ordinary suburban life. Curated by Dr David Sprod, the nephew of George, this major retrospective puts on public display for the first time the legacy of a lifelong collection of truly unique cartoons.
It seems that everyone, irrespective of age, identifies with Sprod’s cartoons and the simplicity of the drawing style. Their naivety and simplicity resonates with children’s art and their unsophisticated ideas parallel the brutally honest and uncensored vision that children bring to this world.
