Barossa International Sculpture Symposium 2008
The Barossa International Sculpture Symposium runs over six weeks, every day. Eight sculptors work on a block of granite each to create sculptures that reflect the local environment. The Symposium is celebrating 20 years of Barossa Sculpture Park and will be held out in the open on Menglers Hill, just below the Look Out above Tanunda. At the close of the Symposium the sculptures remain on site and further enhance the Barossa Sculpture Park. A major artistic closing ceremony is being planned. The invited sculptors come from Japan, Sweden, France UK, Finland, USA and Australia. Visitors are welcome to come daily and observe the exciting development of a sculpture from the raw block to the finished work of art and all the stages in between. This gives them a deep understanding of the artistic process. There will also be the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in carving on the Barossa Community sculpture under the guidance of the designated sculptor. Weekend workshops will be organised for those keen to learn stone carving techniques on their own small piece of stone. Docents will be available to explain and talk to groups. Menglers Hill will be hive of activity, a lot to see for young and old and an ideal destiny for picnics in this rural setting with the magnificent views over the Barossa.
