Intimi, an exhibition by Robert Habel
The cosy exhibiting rooms and great wine of Fox Creek make for a fine venue to show several series of my small personal works. This collection of work titled Intimi features paintings inspired from travels in the Fleurieu Peninsula, Northern Tasmania, Singapore and Italy. They are about personal responses to environments and curious details discovered within these landscapes.
The Fleurieu Peninsula paintings are painted as the sun is setting and highlights the local landscape and the sculptural forms of new industry. Growing up in Launceston has inspired the revisiting of the familiar landscape of Northern Tasmania. These paintings are from the Tamar Valley and the windswept area at the head of the Tamar River and were completed during a residency at Poimena Art Centre in Launceston in 2007. The series from Singapore combines motifs of neck flexing skyscrapers and the humble adornment of local graffiti. This series was made in Singapore during a residency in 2006. The Italian works feature urban images of weathered political posters, graffiti, and the saturated living areas in Naples. This series was painted from drawings and photographs made in Italy in 2007.
Landscapes and their props have always been the subject for my art practise. I aim to make a series of works from most places I visit. Sometimes these are attempts at grand statements, other times the paintings become an intimate visual travel diary.
