Hawker Cup Day 2008
The magnificent Flinders Ranges is the backdrop to this outback celebration. A mixture of social event and outback adventure, the day is full on right from the start. There are only 300 locals in the township, but when the Hawker Cup is on, people come from far and wide to join in the racing action and party atmosphere. The day starts with the Calcutta at 12 pm sharp and reaches a climax with the ‘Northpoint Toyota’ Hawker Cup, an 1800 metre sprint with AUD7500.00 prize money up for grabs. When the horses aren’t thumping down the track there is plenty of family entertainment including a children’s play centre, a giant slide, Fashions of The Field, and various trade stalls including country clothing and woodcraft. On-course bookies and Sky Racing Channel are available for the serious race-goers. Full bar facilities are available as well as a Champagne tent and wine tasting. When the hunger hits you can choose between an outback barbecue, freshly made sandwiches and cakes or hot donuts.
