Pichi Richi Marathon

The Pichi Richi Marathon passes through the picturesque Pichi Richi Pass between Port Augusta and Quorn in the Flinders Ranges over a distance of 42.2 kilometres, the scenery is wonderful. From literally running over the sea to running through the stark red cliffs that characterise the Flinders Ranges. The Pichi Richi Marathon is the only marathon event outside the metropolitan area in South Australia and attracts a number of interstate and overseas competitors. The event is considered by competitors to be one of the best events around.

Port Augusta West is the starting point for the marathon with an average of around 30 entrants making their way to Quorn. Once out of the city of Port Augusta and over the causeway the course turns of f National Highway One and makes its way through Stirling North at the 10 kilometre mark before commencing the very gradual climb into the Flinders Ranges. At the 17.5 kilometre mark a climb is made before the Pichi Richi Pass starts to make its way through the picturesque ranges. The course is then undulating till the 35 kilometre mark where it begins to gradually decline into Quorn.

The event also has later starts for half marathon and 10.5 kilometre runners and walkers. The event also boasts the running of the Pichi Richi Steam Train that runs on the same day. If you miss it on the run you can catch it in the historical township of Quorn.

The finishing area for all participants in the Community Hall, Oval Complex at Quorn where several hundred people gather to greet the competitors as they finish and enjoy the local catering provided by the country hospitality. There are bouncy rides and Pichi Richi Camels to enjoy for non-competitors. Furthermore, there is a plentiful handout of trophies, prizes including a random draw.
