Admella 150 Festival

The SS Admella was sailing from Adelaide to Melbourne when it struck Carpenter Reef, one mile off shore, on 6 August 1859. It took eight days in pounding winter surf before 24 survivors were rescued by a bevy of brave volunteers. During this time 89 lives were lost, mostly due to dehydration and exposure.

It is a story of unimaginable suffering, bravery and heroism - one of the worst maritime tragedies in Australia’s history.

The 150th Anniversary of the wreck of the SS Admella will be commemorated in August 2009.

The Admella Commemoration Advisory Committee is organising a number of official events and is liaising with many local businesses, schools, councils and community groups about other public commemoration functions. It is envisaged that an event program will be finalised by August 2008.
