Cygnet Folk Festival
Celebrate and enjoy the music of mainland and international folk performers as the pubs, halls, cafes, parks and streets of Cygnet come alive with music and dance.
This year's headline acts include BabaGanoush, Bernard Carney, Bluegrass Parkway, Bohemian Nights, Bob Fox (from the UK), Cloudstreet, Dave Steel, Dev'lish Mary, Eilean Mor, Funny Green Smelly Things, Frencham and Smith, Grumpy Neighbour, Jugularity, Kate Rowe, Klezmeritis, Kath Tait (from NZ), Michael Kennedy, Mick Thomas, Margaret Walters and Roaring Forties, Shane Howard, Shooglenifty, The Spooky Men's Chorale, Stephen Taberner, Tete, Tiffany Echardt and Trouble in the Kitchen.
All of this is happening in the small sleepy town of Cygnet, situated in the beautiful Huon Valley and nestled in the picturesque bay of Port Cygnet.
The Cygnet Folk Festival is Tasmania's premier folk and world music event of the year and occurs annually on the second weekend of each January.
With so many venues allowing for a range of concerts, workshops, children's events, sessions and dances, the whole village takes on an open-air festival atmosphere.
The programme features a mix of talented artists including local Tasmanians, mainland Australians and International guests. The theme is "Music and Movement" and as with many previous festivals, music is not the only drawcard. In line with this theme many of the acts selected include music and movement and this invites the audience to get involved with the music, with movement.
Bluegrass Parkway top the bill with, you guessed it, bluegrass. Cygnet would not be the same without the bluegrass musicians in continuous session in the pub and on the streets. Bluegrass Parkway brings an enviable reputation with them.
Bernard Carney is best known for his offbeat humour and downright funny songs such as 'Little Dot Com' and 'Bronchodilation Blues'. Songs off the album 'West', such as 'Midland Railway Workshops', show Bernard is a great all-round musician in the tradition of the folk troubadour. He has a unique talent as songwriter, guitarist and singer all peppered with passion and humour. Also from Western Australia are the Miles to Go Trio and David Hyams.
Trouble in the Kitchen are established as one of the top Australian Celtic bands. Trouble have been regular visitors to Cygnet and will be back to face the challenge from the fabulous Canberra-based Eilean Mor.
Shooglenifty are bringing their distinctive Celtic sound from Scotland so that Luke Plumb can be home for Christmas.
There will be many other popular and well-known performers - too many to list here but just to whet your appetite, Jugularity, Bob Fox and Kath Tait - as well as young, up and coming performers. "The Young Person's Blackboard Competition" attracts both the under 18 musicians who are eager to perform and hopefully win as well as the enthusiastic crowds who enjoy the young talent.
The Town Hall, one of the many historic buildings in Cygnet, is the heartbeat of the Festival, housing the Festival headquarters and provides two of the great venues, the large Concert Hall at the back and the intimate Supper Room upstairs. Across the road is Carmel Hall, used for dances and workshops whilst Loongana Park, in the centre of town, is host to a range of outdoor events which have included drumming, belly dancing and traditional dance displays as well as the monthly Sunday Arts and Crafts Market.
The original aim of the Festival was to run it as a family and community event and to make it as affordable as possible for everyone. Over the last 25 years this philosophy has endured and in keeping with the community spirit the Festival has generally been run and organised by enthusiastic volunteers who bring to the Festival their own individual and unique perspective on the event and its themes.
Make no mistake; the Cygnet Folk Festival will ring to the sound of the cream of Australia's folk musicians in January.
