Wildlife of Gondwana

An exhibition of the fossil record's from Australian and South American sources at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery at Inveresk.
This exhibition features amazing animals for you to come and see - some are quite big and some are very, very small. Some examples include: a Megalania giant extinct lizard which is seven metres long, and a Bullockornis giant bird standing three metres high - from the forested regions of Central Australia ten million years ago. You can also see a Cryolophosaurus meat-eating dinosaur from Antarctica, some of the worlds oldest animals and plants, as well as armoured fish from the far north of Western Australia, among many others.
The exhibit offers a world first display of the fossil record from Australian and South American sources and describes the Wildlife of the great southern super continent Gondwana, from 3.8 billion years ago to the present. There is a sizeable collection of flora and fauna for you to see that have not travelled outside their home institutions before, and a showcase of the research work by some of the worlds leading paleontologists.
A time line context is used throughout the exhibit to illuminate the major changes which have occurred in the Earths history over 3.8 billion years. The unique nature of the Gondwana super continent and the complex interplay of environmental and climatic changes over geological history provides you with an engaging context for the exhibition.
Exhibit items are presented to you as information panels, fossil and rock specimens (originals and casts) including full skeletons (mounted in dynamic poses), and art works reconstructing the past.
The Wildlife of Gondwana Exhibition is presented to you by the Monash Science Centre and the School of Geosciences, Faculty of Science, Monash University. It is supported by Visions of Australia, an Australian Government Program supporting touring exhibitions by providing funding assistance for the development and touring of cultural material across Australia.
