Our own Tasmanian Ballet company performs one of the most popular ballets in the world – a story of enchantment and love
It is thrilling that the Tasmanian Ballet Company is completing Tchaikovsky’s trio of ballets with The Sleeping Beauty this year, after having performed his two other great works for the ballet stage one after the other – The Nutcracker in 2010 and Swan Lake in 2011. This will give North West coast audiences an opportunity to experience all three wonderful works.
The Sleeping Beauty was first performed in 1890. The premiere performance took place at the famous Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersberg. Commissioned by the Director of the Imperial Theatre in St Petersberg, Tchaikovsky completed the score in 1889, and is the second of his three ballets. The original scenario was conceived by Ivan Vsevolozhsky after Charles Perrault’s fairy tale La Belle au Bois Dormant. The choreographer of the original production was the famed Marius Petipa.
The work, with its well known story, has become one of the classical repertoire’s most famous ballets.
