Castlemaine State Festival

Established in 1976 the Castlemaine State Festival is Victoria s key regional arts festival as recognised by Arts Victoria, and the premier arts event for the Mount Alexander Shire.


A biennial festival with a focus on quality multi-arts events delivered over 10 days, the 16th festival was celebrated in April 2007. The Festival is ten day explosion of the arts in the heart of the Victorian goldfields.


A festival which embraces work of local, national and international artists, including music, opera and theatre to installations and spoken word. The festival showcases stunning new Australian works, street theatre, puppetry in old gold diggings, and festive family fun. From contemporary drama, burlesque cabaret to cutting edge orchestral works plus so much more. This heartfelt arts explosion is presented in a captivating collection of unique goldfield venues.


Using locales from gold mines to theatres and shire h from galleries to parks and gardens in Castlemaine, Chewton and Maldon the Castlemaine State Festival is an expression of the rich diversity of the region.


The Castlemaine State Festival is also committed to becoming a Carbon Neutral Festival. Working with the Mount Alexander Sustainability Group we ensured that all our electricity needs for the Festival were sourced from renewable energy, had optional Green Ticketing, a food program focusing on local produce, a Carbon Neutral Hub provided by Mount Alexander Sustainability Group, improved recycling and waste management, transport projects including free bicycles for festival-goers and special festival walks, and a green art focus.


In 2007, the Festival staged more than 70 performing and spoken word shows plus 60 visual arts events and installations by the finest performers and artists from the region, Australia and beyond. This festival consisted of 75 ticketed events, about 40 free events, and over 90 additional umbrella programs!
