Didgfest Australia
DIGGING the DIDGERIDOO
Perhaps the oldest musical instrument on earth, the didgeridoo is a source of passion and excitement for many people the world over. It s also a source of inspiration and expression in Castlemaine at the historic Theatre Royal.
HIGHLIGHTING this ancient instrument and welcoming participation across all age groups,
organiser, Castlemainiac and self-confessed-didge devotee, Raymond Mow together with many like-minded didge-experts will participate in this hands-on cultural exchange, where you ll enjoy children s workshops, concerts, market stalls and much more.
Raymond enjoys lifting the didgeridoo s veil of intrigue during an event that acknowledges Aboriginal people as the traditional owners of the didgeridoo, while performers enjoy the instrument in a contemporary context, sharing their enthusiasm with the wider community.
It s not an indigenous festival; it s about the music, he said. Didgfest will present a series practical and simple to understand workshops from beginners to advanced.
Activities at this lively event range from didgeridoo-making workshops for kids, introductory Didge playing for the young ones and women's-only workshop through to indigenous story telling and a three-hour evening concert. On Sunday there ll be further storytelling theatre and participant-led workshops culminating in an exciting concert. The event features all-day workshop Ancient Voice with Lynn McShang creating a didge-choir. This session involves composing and performing a new work wrapping-up with a courtyard performance at the theatre.
In 2008, Didgfest-goers were treated to performances by Charlie McMahon and Gondwanaland, Andrew Langford, Germany's G G and Doris Neff, Jan 'Yarn Wostizky, Kinja, Bruce Rogers and Didgeman while having an chance to get up close and personal in this colourful didge-scene.
