1940s Melbourne: Photographs by Albert Tucker
Albert Tucker acquired his first camera a second-hand Foth Derby in 1939, and so commenced a lasting practice of recording the places, people and events of his fascinating life. While some of his photographs have helped make famous the protagonists of the Heide circle of the 1940s, such well-known images are supported by a large and diverse collection that offers a broader view of the period s cultural and political milieu.
This rich resource of some 500 photographs dating between 1939 and 1948 has been tapped to present an artist s view of Melbourne during a tumultuous decade. Along with inner-city laneways and working-class streets, Tucker captured social and cultural occasions such as May Day marches and political rallies; performances of the New Theatre and Wirth s Circus; leisure time at the Fitzroy Gardens and Luna Park; and the unique characters, and characteristics, of a number of artist hubs that he frequented in Melbourne s suburbs: Heide, Montsalvat, the Boyd family s Open Country and Danila Vassilieff s Stonygrad among them.
In addition to over 50 exhibition prints, many of which are new to the public realm, the exhibition includes the artist s original contact prints, related paintings from his early oeuvre, and archival material drawn from Heide and the State Library of Victoria collections.
