Herring Island Summer Arts Festival
Herring Island Summer Arts Festival began in 2006 as a collaboration between the exhibiting arts groups, Parks Victoria and the Friends of Herring Island.
This followed on from the work of Maudie Palmer who, as curator of the Herring Island Environmental Sculpture Park, established the permanent collection of art works on the island and ran art exhibitions in the renovated scout hall.
In 2007 the exhibiting groups are the Wildlife Art Society of Australasia, the Association of Sculptors of Victoria, an independent group of artists from Monash University Art and Design, the Contemporary Art Society of Victoria Inc. and Ceramics Victoria.
There will also be a special program of events on Australia Day including tours of the island and its permanent collection run by the Friends of Herring Island and arts demonstrations in the gallery courtyard.
Visiting the island is an adventure in itself in that access is across the Yarra River - most comfortably using Parks Victoria's punt service. There is coffee available at the cafe near Como landing.
The landing is adjacent to the Capital City bike trail and some cycle parking is available near the landing.
During the 2007 festival a part of the commission on sales and donations was taken for support of maintenance of the permanent collection. The first work to be looked at will be Tanderrum by Ellen Jose. More information on the collection is available from both Parks Victoria and Friends of Herring Island web sites.
