The Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award

Background

Launched in 2000, The Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award is one of Australia's leading prizes for sculptors in Australia.

It is realisation of a bequest by the late Keith Wood, honouring his wife, painter Helen Lempriere. Keith Wood was very keen to make a significant philanthropic contribution to the arts that would endure long after he died.

In the last years of his life he conferred with Perpetual Trustees about where his gift could do the most good. He discovered there was almost no philanthropic support for people working in the field of arts and crafts.

Therefore he set out in his will that an art prize honouring his late wife, should be established to support artists working in three dimensional art forms.

In its ninth year, the 2009 Award will features 20 finalists and their works will provide the basis for a stunning exhibition in the gardens of Werribee Park until 31 May 2009.

At all other times of the year, you can explore the stunning Werribee Sculpture Walk, a unique and permanent outdoor exhibition that features a selection of large scale works and extends from the Mansion and hotel to the recently developed Riverine area.
