Toby Sullivan: Not Quite Right
Toby Sullivan has been married to his husband for 7 years, is seriously balding, closer to 40 than 30 and is not entirely clear on the difference between Bondi and Bondi Junction. So what on earth is he doing in glitzy Sydney for a day?
During this hour of raw and insightful stand-up comedy, Toby traverses the under-age, overpriced and utterly beautiful jewel in Australia's Crown that most of us recognise as the real capital. But it's not all ogling on Oxford St and cocktails at Kirribilli. Toby finds that he's too daggy for Darlinghurst, too right-wing for Redfern and too nine-to-five for the North Shore. In other words, wherever he goes, he's Not Quite Right. This is a literate and suburbanly honest stand-up show from one of Melbourne's best-kept comedy secrets. Toby has been performing regularly for a decade: from such kitschy gems as the long running comedy trivia night Quiz Internationale to the lofty heights of a red carpet reporter for the ABC TV arts show Vulture to being one third of the cult-classic Talking Poofy. He's also had numerous guest spots on ABC radio, performed regularly at Melbourne's many festivals and clubs and written for a number of comedy shows and comedians including, most recently, award-winning rising star Josh Thomas. Not Quite Right represents a rare opportunity to see Toby up close and personal in a feature-length solo show.
Hilarious and spunky, Not Quite Right is about being stuck pressing your nose up against the window of culture and identity. Yes, Sydney is a metaphor and yes, the show does feature a quiet bit at the end where Toby Learns Something About Himself. A comedy from a local favourite about almost feeling comfortable, some of the time.
