Why not explore the sites relating to Les Darcy; a courageous 19 year old boxer who was idolised around the country, who at the time (1909 to 1916) was the middleweight and heavyweight champion of Australia. Marvel at the government buildings and grand mansions on the East Maitland Heritage Walk. Maitland Gaol is one of the Hunter Region’s most iconic attractions and definitely worth a visit, take a self guided audio tour or book onto one of the guided tours. East Maitland, unlike Maitland, was surveyed and planned in detail before East Maitland was officially proclaimed in 1833 and was known as the government town. Liberal provision was made for public buildings, churches, schools and public reserves by Surveyor G.B White.
