Merriwa

Urban

The small town of Merriwa is located on the Golden Highway in the Upper Hunter Valley. Surrounded by fertile countryside, it flourished as an agricultural area after its settlement in 1839. A stopover point for travellers journeying from the Liverpool Ranges to the Liverpool Plains, there are many fine examples of colonial architecture in its homesteads, courthouses, police stations, hotels and churches.

Merriwa is a great base for exploring the outdoor and cultural attractions of the Upper Hunter. Take the Upper Hunter Wine Trail and visit vineyards and cellar doors, explore the nearby Goulburn River National Park and the country towns of Sandy Hollow and Cassilis. Don’t miss the Festival of the Fleeces held on the June long weekend celebrating the town’s rural heritage.

Merriwa is just over two hours drive from Newcastle via the Golden Highway.
