Mungindi

  • Located uniquely on both New South Wales and Queensland border, Mungindi is the only border town in the Southern Hemisphere with the same name on both sides of the border. Mungindi's population approximately 700 people, with the district producing wheat, cotton, wool, beef and sheep. The Kamilaroi meaning for Mungindi is "Water Hole by the River". The border runs down the centre of the Barwon River and under the centre of the bridge and whilst there is no exact marker in the bridge to indicate the point, most people take from the centre of the bridge.
