Thirroul

Suburb

The English writer DH Lawrence lived in Thirroul in 1922 and wrote much of his Australian novel Kangaroo here. Wyewurk, the home he lived in, is now privately owned, however a park at the end of Craig Street offers a glimpse of the views Lawrence enjoyed.

The town maintains a proud cultural heritage and has a lively arts community.

But the most compelling reason to visit Thirroul is its wonderful beach: a sweep of golden sand backed by a large grassy park with a children’s play area. It is close to crafty shops and delightful cafes. If visiting in April check out the Thirroul Seaside and Arts Festival were artists throughout the region showcase their work over a weekend with lots of interactive activities for the whole family.

Be sure to pedal the Wollongong Cycleway, a purpose-built track parallel to the ocean that passes through Thirroul. Nearby Stanwell Park and Dapto are worth a visit.
