  • Situated west of the Newcastle Range, Georgetown is the centre of the Etheridge gold field and of amateur gold prospecting. The surrounding area is covered with rolling hills and wooded savannah grasslands. Georgetown is an intersection point for all roads approaching the Gulf Savannah region from the east with the exception of the Chillagoe to Normanton/Karumba route. The township is well serviced and is a major point for touring circuits to the south and east which direct visitors through spectacular scenic and historic points of interest.
