Roebourne is 39 kilometres north of Karratha on the North West Coastal Highway. It was established in 1864, and is the oldest town on the northwest coast. Roebourne is the oldest surviving town between Geraldton and Darwin. The first white settlers in the area, John and Emma Withnell established Mount Welcome Station nearby on the site of ''Ieramargadu" [pronounced Ira-muga-doo], a fresh water pool on the Harding River. Many of the original buildings in and around Roebourne have been restored and provide an insight into earlier times when Roebourne was regarded as the capital of the northwest. The climate is
