Wollombi, New South Wales

Wollombi VillageA Historic Gateway to the internationally famous Hunter Valley Wine Country, or peaceful and rewarding destination in its own right: visit www.wollombivalley.com and choose for yourself.

Wollombi is the first town in the Lower Hunter Valley and buildings date back to early nineteenth century. Known and treasured for thousands of years as a meeting place by the original peoples, Wollombi later became a stopping place on the Great North Road, built by convicts in the 1830s and used by early settlers.

Today’s visitors will find the Wollombi Valley far removed from the fast pace of city life.

But the tranquility of the valley belies the vibrancy of the life of the inhabitants. The community's artistic and social activities show enormous diversity and creativity with a busy calendar for residents and visitors alike. Wollombi Valley is famous for its aboriginal engravings, museum, historical buildings, convict artifacts, boutique wineries, market days, wonderful theatrical productions and art exhibitions and “Doctor Jurd’s Jungle Juice” at the local tavern.

Explore the Wollombi Valley Wine Trail and talk to the Boutique wine growers at the cellar doors. Enjoy a relaxed stroll around the historic village and visit the remarkably preserved general store. Stay for a weekend or longer in local accommodation, which ranges from a 5 star guest house in the village to a cabin in the bush.

From the intimate, historic village, featured in the ABC TV’s ‘Fireflies”, through the picturesque valley to the enormous Yengo and. Wollemi wilderness areas in the World Heritage National Park, Wollombi enchants all who visit.

Far removed from the bustle of Sydney, yet only 90 minutes away. Wollombi is an ideal getaway location.

From Sydney (1.5hr) take F3 to Peats Ridge exit then follow Tourist Route 33. From Gosford and Newcastle (1hr) head for Cessnock then take Wollombi Road.
