Mount Keira is residential, institutional and parkland area, Mount Keira is named from an Aboriginal word meaning "large lagoon" or "high mountain".
Mount Keira forms part of the Illawarra escarpment which it joins by a high saddle on the back (western) side. It is capped by a westward sloping plateau of relatively hard sandstone ringed on the remaining three sides by cliffs. From the cliff base the mountain slopes down to the surrounding foothills and coastal plain. From Wollongong the mountain looks rather flat topped; while from the north it appears part of the escarpment.
Major features of the area include the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area, the University of Wollongong, University of Wollongong Recreation and Aquatic Centre, Rhododendron Park, Mount Keira, Mount Keira Summit Park, Illawarra District Scouts Camp, Byarong Park, Keira Village Park and Wollongong Botanic Gardens.
