Unanderra is a rural, residential and industrial area, with residential areas located mainly in the east. Unanderra - is bounded Unanderra railway line, the suburb of Farmborough Heights and the suburb of Figtree in the north, Five Islands Road, the suburb of Berkeley, Mullet Creek, the AIS railway line and West Dapto Road in the south and the locality of Dombarton in the west.

Unanderra is named from an Aboriginal word meaning "meeting place of creeks" or the "junction of the two creeks”. It was previously known as Charcoal or Charcoal Creek.
