Destination Alice Springs
The Alice Springs area encompasses some of the world's most isolated communities and seemingly endless stretches of relatively unexplored desert. At its heart is the town itself, situated on the banks of the Todd River (which only occasionally runs with water), a thriving, spirited outback centre as famous for its colourful characters as its surprisingly modern selection of services and activities.
The West and East MacDonnell Ranges straddle the town, providing a stunning backdrop and accessible area for day trips and excursions. Head to the West MacDonnells for an outback swim at any of its delightful swimming holes. Bushwalkers can take on the Larapinta Trail, an exciting long distance walking trail that runs for 223 kilometres along the backbone of the West MacDonnell Ranges from Alice Springs west to Mt Sonder. Head to the East MacDonnells to try gem fossicking and discover more isolated camping facilities.
Only the most intrepid of travellers will venture deep into the remote Simpson and Tanami Deserts but a trip to Hermannsburg, the birthplace of Albert Namitjira (one of Australia's most famous Aboriginal artists) on the outskirts of the Tanami provides priceless insight into the spirit of Central Australian indigenous communities.
