The expansion west of Townsville over the years has resulted in the birth of Thuringowa, now a city in its own right. It extends over an area of 4000 square kilometres and it is an engine room of new industries and developments. Importantly, care has been taken to preserve natural attractions including parks and gardens along the banks of Ross River. In the grounds of Thuringowa City Council located on Hinchinbrook Drive, there is a striking war memorial set in landscaped gardens.
