Croydon, Queensland

CroydonGeneral Information: The Gulf Savannah is an interesting region to visit all year, however, during the monsoon season, transportation methods must be carefully considered, as some parts of the Gulf Savannah region suffer from a lack of road infrastructure.

The Gulflander is an historic railway link established in the 1800's to service Croydon, which was then a booming gold town (it boasted 19 hotels in its heyday of which only one remains) from Normanton, which was this area's port prior to the establishment of Karumba. Croydon Historic Village is now an historic precinct under a restoration plan.

Surrounding environs - savannah grasslands, low rolling hills which are rich in the historic remains of early gold mining activity.

Historic Croydon

With charm enough to seduce any passing artist or romantic movie director, Croydon presents a delightful retrospective into the heady days of gold fever in the late 1800's, when an estimated 30,000 people lived and worked in the nearby goldfields. In the full flush of the boom, Croydon was the fourth largest town in Queensland with an astounding 36 pubs bustling each day. The town, beautifully and lovingly restored into a living historical precinct, now is both welcoming and intriguing. Its inhabitants enjoy sharing a yarn with visitors, and relish their role in the Outback legend they have created.  more
