It follows approximately the route taken by Captain Charles Sturt in 1845 as he led an exploration team into Inland Australia. The route follows main roads across the region from just north of Broken Hill, across the Barrier Ranges, onto the red sand plain adjacent to the wild dog fence, before linking back to the north east and on to Milparinka. Sturt's Depot Glen is included on the route. The route is shown on maps on the Outback NSW website. Accommodation is available on station properties along

Old Wentworth Gaol
First of the Australian designed gaols, with an escape-free record Built in 1879 until 1881, the small single storey brick gaol with bluestone trim was designed by colonial architect James Barnett. It was the first of the Australian designed gaols before the Hay and Dubbo gaols. The bricks were made from the local clay that was found on-site, by Joseph Firth, and the bluestone was transported from Malmsbury, Victoria. The gaol replaced over-crowded lock-ups and was utilised until its closure in 1927. After its closure as a gaol, the building was utilised as extra classrooms for the Wentworth Central School

Sturt's Tree
In January 1830 Captain Charles Sturt weighed anchor opposite this tree when he reached the confluence of the Darling and Murray Rivers. Sturt's diary entry on arrival describes in detail "... surprised by the appearance in view, at the termination of a reach, a long line of magnificent trees. There is a huge sandbank, a little below us, projecting nearly a third way across the channel. Preparing to examine the new river, the Darling ...it appears to be 100 yards in breadth and a depth of over 12 feet. Its banks are sloping, and overhung by trees of magnificent size.

Balranald Heritage Trail
Various early explorers - including John Oxley in 1817, Charles Sturt in 1830 and Sir Thomas Mitchell in 1836 - visited the area. It was Mitchell's enthusiastic comments about the quality of the land in the region that encouraged settlement, and Balranald was gazetted in 1851. As a crossing point on the Murrumbidgee River, Balranald prospered throughout the second half of the 19th century. Discover local histories along the Balranald Heritage Trail, which passes sites of historic significance. A map is available from the Balranald Visitor Information Centre.
