A test of stamina and skill
The four-wheel drive experiences are legendary - whether across steep, razor-edged tracks in the Flinders Ranges or over the sand dunes and salt lakes of the deserts. Tag-along with a group or go alone. Camp in remote locations to watch the blazing sunsets and see clear night skies, or book into an outback pub for an hilarious night with the locals.
Explorer's Way
The trip from Adelaide to Darwin is one of Australia's great driving adventures. The Stuart Highway truly is Explorer's Way: tracing the route of 19th century explorer John McDouall Stuart, who in 1862 became the first person to traverse the continent from south to north. These days the entire 3,245-kilometre road is sealed – making it perfect for exploring places like the opal mining town of Coober Pedy, Woomera rocket range, Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Alice Springs.
Hike the Heysen trail
At 1500 kilometres this is Australia's longest walking trail. It starts at the coastal beaches of the Fleurieu Peninsula where seals and sea eagles live, crosses the gum-clad Mount Lofty Ranges, passes the world-renowned wineries of the Barossa then climbs into the magnificent Flinders Ranges to end at Parachilna Gorge.
Rock paintings
To see excellent Aboriginal rock paintings, created by the Adnyamathanha people of the Flinders Ranges, visit the Yourambulla Caves, a few kilometres south of Hawker. You will also see wonderful panoramic views of the ranges.
Simply remarkable
Mount Remarkable National Park, lying across the Southern Flinders Ranges, offers a diverse array of plants and animals. And with its dramatic scenery, it's a great destination for bushwalkers and nature lovers.
Southern Flinders Ranges
Charming villages support a thriving farming community and a rich mix of bed and breakfast places and farmstays. You can even spend the night in the old Gladstone Gaol. Highlights include rodeos, Aboriginal carvings, historic hotels and diverse arts and crafts. In the ranges see deep red gorges, native plants, wildlife and gum-lined creeks.
