A tour through the Montreal Goldfield in Bermagui is a great experience to suit all ages and should not be missed. The goldfield is an intact example of alluvial diggings in the 1880s and the only one in Australia that goes into the sea. Your guide tells the story of the Montreal settlement, how the gold got there, the mining processes and the Great Unsolved Bermagui Mystery. All this as you wander down pathways and boardwalks through the beautiful tree fern forest that covers the diggings today. All the shafts are fenced off or covered over so you can look down them in safety.
While you are there, call into the Heritage Centre for displays and information on life on the goldfields.
Entry is by guided tour only. Tours leave from the entrance at 2pm daily and take just over an hour. 60 per cent limited mobility access.
