Bungonia State Conservation Area
Bungonia State Recreation Area is the largest recreation area in New South Wales. At 3893ha the area covers the strip of the Southern Tablelands from the spectacular limestone gorge of Bungonia Creek, south along the steep west bank of the Shoalhaven River. The area is adjacent to Morton National Park across
the river and to the south.
The area has hilly ridges of the dry sclerophyll forests, flora and fauna and deep limestone caverns. The gorge at Bungonia Creek is the most spectacular feature, it is the deepest in Australia and among the most dramatic in the world. The almost vertical walls are over 300 metres high.
There are plenty of opportunities for bushwalking and various types of adventure activities, such as canyoning and caving (BASE jumping prohibited). The park has a well-equipped car-based camping area.
Please note that Spring Creek Canyon and the caves in the adjacent property 'Carne' are closed indefinitely. Entry to these caves is not permitted.
All rock sport activities (caving, abseiling, cannoning or rock climbing) and bushwalking must register at the office before proceeding into the park.
The camping area has hot showers, toilets and a community kitchen with indoor fireplace. Day-use and picnic facilities are provided at most parking areas. Bush camping is permitted in the Shoalhaven River area after advising the Park Ranger. Campers are reminded to bring their own water
