Canberra Observatory
The Canberra Planetarium is one of the most modern in Australia and offers a variety of entertaining and educational shows. Featuring a Zeiss star projector, to simulate the night sky, twin banks of special effects projectors, a video projector and a truly awesome digital sound system, it is unlike anything you have ever experienced before. Featuring an 11metre perforated aluminum dome screen, manufactured in the USA by Astro-Tec, the dome is an engineering marvel in its own right.
In the IK6 Dome, the IK6 is housed and is the Observatory's largest instrument. It is a reflecting telescope with a 16 inch (41 cm) primary mirror and features an unusual swiveling secondary mirror. This gives a choice of two focal lengths at either the Cassegrain or Newtonian focus. The instrument was custom built and is equatorially mounted and motor driven. The Dome also houses a Starfire 7 refractor.
The observatory houses many professional telescopes with there is an astronomical officer on duty to talk about the sky charts and photo displays. Tours of domes, equipment and telescopes provided and an opportunity to view through the telescopes, weather permitting.
