St Peter and Paul's Old Cathedral
Located at the corner of Verner and Bourke Street, in the Parish of Mary Queen of Apostles is the original Cathedral for the Archdiocese of Canberra Goulburn which is now referred to as Sts Peter & Pauls' Old Cathedral. The former Cathedral and Bishop’s House are significant items of the city’s cultural and architectural heritage. They are recognised by the National Trust of Australia (NSW) and located within the Urban Conservation Precinct of Goulburn.
The Italian architect Andrea Stombuco designed the Cathedral and supervised the construction of the first stage. Mr Charles Spadaccini then supervised the second stage of construction.
Several types of stone were used in the construction of the Cathedral. The most significant of these was diorite porphyrite, a very hard green stone from a quarry on the Bungonia Road. The use of the green porphyry stone makes this the only Greenstone Cathedral in the world. Victorian Malmsbury bluestone from Victoria was used for the internal pillars.
This traditional Gothic Cathedral is the home of many fine stained glass windows, fashioned on Belgium and English styles.
The interior of the building contains many specially designed items, including a Pugin lectern, Baptismal font, brass candlesticks, vases, Tabernacle doors and statues. A particular feature of the Cathedral is the W. Hill organ now recognised as one of the finest in Australia.
The Parish is currently undertaking major restoration work both on the interior and exterior of the Cathedral.
