Carcoar Historic Town And Walking Tour

Carcoar, surveyed in 1838, was the first rural town beyond Bathurst and is the
third oldest town west of the Blue Mountains. Classified by the National
Trust, it is an excellent collection of historic buildings lovingly restored
and preserved in a unique setting very reminiscent of an English village.

There are 31 buildings of historical value within the town of Carcoar.
A brochure that contains a map and more information about these buildings is
available from the Orange Visitors Centre and most places in Carcoar.
This tour of Carcoar's rich architectural heritage tells the story of colonial NSW
from the era of wattle and daub huts, through the heady days of the gold rush
and then the long slow decline that began with the devastating financial crash
of the 1890's. Carcoar never fully recovered the vigour of those early years and
now only the architecture remains to give us some sense of the unbridled optimism of the period.
