Chifley Home

Ben Chifley's cottage was the home of the former Prime Minister of Australia (1945-1949).

Ben Chifley was born and raised in Bathurst. He spent much of his childhood with his grandparents on their farm out of town. At 17 he joined the NSW Railways and climbed through the ranks to become the youngest engine driver at the age of 26.

After Ben was elected to parliament he continued to be involved in the local council and retained his home in Bathurst where his wife Elizabeth stayed when he was away in Canberra. Upon his death in 1951, she continued to live in the same cottage until her own death in 1962.

The home contains memorabilia of Ben Chifley's years in office as Prime Minister of Australia.
