Lake Macquarie

One of Australia's largest permanent coastal salt water lake, also the name of the surrounding city with the main towns being Belmont, Charlestown, Cooranbong, Toronto, Swansea and Morisset.

The lake was discovered by Captain William Reid who sailed his 30 tonne schooner 'Martha' into the narrow entrance in 1800 mistaking it for his intended destination of the Hunter River. One of the earliest settlers was the Reverend Lancelot Threlkeld, a renowned pioneer who opened up the first coal mine in the area and subdivided land.

To the thousands of tourists who visit each year, the lake is a picturesque surprise of scenic variety. To the fisherman, it is the chance of a whiting, flathead and maybe even a blue swimmer crab. To the sailor, it might be a leisurely cruise or a hectic chase around the marker buoys in anything from a dinghy to an offshore racer.

A wide range of accommodation is available in the area: Caravan Parks, Hotel/Motels, Resort, Holiday Lettings and Bed & Breakfast. Facilities available for hire include: Houseboats, Yachts, Cruisers and
Water Sport Equipment.
