History Tour - Segenhoe InnSegenhoe Inn in Aberdeen, built by convicts in 1837, is now 171 years old. 20,000 acres which became known as Segenhoe Estate was granted to Thomas Potter Macqueen in 1823. Macqueen was a member of British Parliament and was very keen on securing his piece of the Great Southern Land. He commissioned 2 ships in 1824 to sail to Australia laden with free settlers, mostly Scottish, to work the estate, farm machinery and other equipment, domestic implements and building materials, cattle, sheep, goats and a Blue Merle Scottish cattle dog. Peter MacIntyre was appointed overseer to supervise the establishment of the estate named by him after Segenhoe Manor in Bedforshire where Potter Macqueen was born. These two ships are important to Australian history as well as to the history of the establishment of Segenhoe Estate and Aberdeen because they were the first two ships to be commissioned to sail to Australia that carried all free settlers - truly the beginning of free enterprise in Australia. All ships sent to Australia prior to this were essentially convict transports. Restored to its former grandeur and furnished with antiques, silver and crystal, historic Segenhoe Inn is a must-see for lovers of Australian History and who are enamoured by the gracious living of times past. All of the rooms are individually and beautifully appointed in styles to reflect the early history of Segenhoe and are named in honour of icons who were important at the time of the building of the Inn. These form the basis for telling the story of Segenhoe Estate and the Inn. This is the very interesting story of one of the first white settlers to the Upper Hunter Valley. There is much to learn on this tour which also includes a tour of the gardens which are often used for weddings and other special garden functions. Why not consider, not just the tour but immerse yourself in this interesting story and transport yourself back 172 years, by choosing to stay at the Inn. | |
