Thirroul Beach

Thirroul Beach is one kilometre in length and faces east so it picks up swell from most directions. There’s little wind protection at either end, although big southerly swells or southerly winds get slowed up somewhat by the Sandon Point headland.

Thirroul’s beach breaks are at their best on a north-northeast swell, which will turn out either a punchy bowl shape or a long open wall, depending on the way the sandbanks are set up. There are usually three peaks to choose from when the northerly swell is running, but once it gets over one metre they’re suitable for intermediate to experienced surfers only.

Thirroul is patrolled by Thirroul Surf Lifesaving Club and Wollongong Council lifeguards during summer and there’s a saltwater pool that’s great for a swim and super-safe as it has its own lifeguard. Free gas barbeques, picnic shelters and a large open grassed area right behind the beach make it especially family-friendly.
