Hangdog Climbing Gym

Indoor rock-climbing is a great way to introduce total beginners of all ages to the thrills of climbing in a controlled environment without the need to learn most of the skills required to climb cliffs in the outdoors. This is because the indoor rock-climbing at Hangdog has the ropes already set up, and belay anchors in place for each of the nearly one hundred different climbs. It normally takes about ten minutes to be taught how to belay (hold the rope) for your partner by Hangdog staff on your first visit. Almost anyone 12 years of age or older can be taught how to belay safely for their climbing partner, but children under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult. The introductory lesson is free with your entry charge, and once you are competent at belaying you can climb or attempt to climb any of the many different routes in the centre.

The difficulty of the climbs ranges from grade 7 (easy) to more than grade 25 (extremely difficult), so you can rate your climbing ability on the climbs you are able to get to the top of without assistance from the rope. There is no actual time limit, so if you have the stamina you can climb for hours on end. Probably the most fun way to get fitter and stronger than you ever thought you could be on whatever day of the week suits you. It's a popular mid-week training ground for "outdoor rock climbers" who want to push their climbing ability higher. A great place for youth groups, social groups and others to organise an activity that is a bit different! An interesting alternative to the weights gym or aerobics!
