Tenterfield Saddlers Shop
The Tenterfield Saddlery was built in the 1860s of hand cut local blue granite for the late C.H. Pavel, who was a saddler and tannery owner. With walls 20 inches thick it made ideal premises for the Australian joint stock bank when they commenced trading from this building in 1871. The doors and woodwork are of red cedar and apart from the replacement panes of glass the building is in original condition.
George Woolnough, the grandfather of the late singer/composer Peter Allen, conducted his saddlery business from the shop for 50 years. Banjo Paterson was a customer at the turn of the century. Fine hand made saddles are still made by the Saddler, Trevor Gibson. A new range of Australian made clothing has been introduced by the new owner, Brian Meldon.
